I usually never respond to whatever gossip is running around in the rumor mill, but recently it came to my attention that a lotta people think I underwent some type of plastic surgery procedures…

Talkin with my sis about it, we couldn’t help but laugh about the lack of truth to it all.
After seeing some of the photos of me from where a lot of this criticism was taken from, I couldn’t help but see why people might think things… I mean, even I can admit I looked terrible! I guess we all have our days…. Ha!

But then I started thinking about a journal entry I wrote a while back, and even though the new book isn’t released yet (but will be very soon!) I thought it would be neat to share it with all of you, and give you a glimpse of not only whats to come in the book, but how I feel about the subject myself.

In no way am I putting down anyone’s decision to get plastic surgery, and hope this doesn’t offend anyone, so I hope it doesnt come across in any way critical…

Charity Jones

Charity is only thirty-three years old—and what a first impression! I couldn’t think of a single guy who wouldn’t easily find her attractive; her sassy smart-aleck wit only added to her overall refreshing personality. But as perfect as someone might seem externally, there is always the likelihood of inner shadows and darkness and insecurities. You wait long enough, and what’s underneath the skin will ultimately emerge . . .

The painting that Charity brought in for reference showed a woman with two diametrically opposed halves. One half represented the plastic surgery addict, complete with a Botox needle at the lip and a piece of silicone escaping from the loosely stitched incision on the breast cradled in her hand. The other half would be best described as Mother Nature—organically beautiful, with tousled brown locks of hair cascading past her shoulder. Instead of an implant, this half of the figure cradles a newborn.

It took me a while to understand why Charity had chosen this piece. I suppose the message was obvious, but it was less obvious to me why she’d choose this subject matter to take up a good amount of her upper back. Maybe it was my lack of experience in the whole plastic surgery department that made me naive enough to believe that Charity’s physical loveliness was as much a gift from a God as from a physician. Or maybe it just goes to show that she had done her research and really chosen the best doctor.

Growing up in Chicago, Charity considered herself a “fat kid.” Kids can be so cruel, and constant ridicule goes a long way to breaking down our self-esteem. Charity grew up, managed to shed the weight, and made her way to California—the land of the “beautiful people,” where levels of perfection can be unrealistic.

After undergoing multiple breast enhancements on top of a lengthy list of other surgical procedures, Charity found herself obsessed with being fit, symmetrical, wrinkle free, and perfectly tan. As a woman, I can understand how we can feed off of the physical idealism that surrounds us on billboards and in magazines, television, and movies, making it all too easy to focus on all our imperfections every time we look into our own mirror. We’re bombarded by these false idealizations everywhere we go. Of course, Charity’s learned concept of perfect was unattainable. She couldn’t accept herself, because she didn’t feel her beauty inside—and not feeling it, she had surgery again and again to try to find it outside herself.

For me, I can definitely be my own worst critic—and I usually am. After all, I’m the one who sees my reflection when I get out of the shower, when I undress at the end of my day, when I try on clothes. Still, it baffled me to hear Charity talk about how many times she has submitted to the knife in search of beauty.

At one point, I found myself getting frustrated with her, wishing she could see how beautiful she truly is. Our conversation made me laugh and think, and I really enjoyed Charity’s company. There was nothing not to like! After Charity’s severe amount of visits with plastic surgeons over what to do with this and that, I wonder if there was a point where she felt like she had taken it too far?

There’s a place inside all of us that begs to feel sexy and loved—but no amount of surgery will ever get that for you, because you have to find it within yourself. I hear myself starting to sound like a cliché, but it’s the goddamn honest truth.

What do we gain from the Botoxed face that conceals the clues to our ages? When did being older, wiser, and more experienced stop being sexy?
