Statistically, it is females that appear to be more susceptible to yeast infections than men. Small numbers of the fungus Candida, a yeast, is ever present within the vagina. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases reports that most women will experience a yeast infection within their lifetime. By ‘most women’ I’m taking approximately 78%. Around 46% will experience this condition more than once. If you find yourself within the 34% who don’t get it at all – good for you!
The presence of the Candida, within the vagina, is only a problem if it multiplies into a yeast overgrowth. Under normal conditions, although present, it is held in check by the body’s natural defence mechanisms, and presents no real problem at all.
Symptoms can include, but are not limited to: continual irritation of the vagina, pain during sexual activity, vaginal rash/swelling/redness, unpleasant ‘creamy’ consistency or watery discharge or pain/burning during urination.
It is possible to have no symptoms at all. Some women are only alerted to the problem, when their sexual partner reports that they have a symptom, or have tested positive for the infection. It then follows that they too require an examination.
Studies have shown various elements can be associated with the higher risk of infection for women, including: malfunction of the body’s immune system, pregnancy, following an antibiotics course, the use of an ablution douche, the use of feminine hygiene sprays, steroids or diabetes. If any of these strike a chord with you, due to recent changes in your health or hygeine routine, then you may get a clue as to why this has flared up in your own case.
We have come to expect that antibiotics can come to our aid. But, unfortunately, not in this case. As the good bacteria, that fortifies our immune system, is also killed by the antibiotic treatment. Yes, that surprised me too!
While the infection stays inside the vagina, it is kept contained. Whereas Systemic Candidiasis, where the candida moves throughout the body, is the greater of the two evils. Due to the virus moving to various moist areas of our anatomy. The parts of our body that is appears to thrive in include: the liver, the lungs, bronchials, the brain, within the sinuses, intestine and the colon.
Satisfyingly, there are many treatments available for a vaginal yeast infection. So you don’t need to worry about a long-term problem. It’s all part of the ups and down of life. Inconvenient and unpleasant: yes, a huge deal: certainly not.
So, should this currently be a source of concern to you – relax! Fate has not singled you out for some form of ‘punishment’ for cheating on your math exam in 7th grade. With a course of treatment, you’ll soon have your life back the way you want it.
